Afterglow
A fluid, draped eveningwear look inspired by the calmness after a storm and the beauty found in slowing down
For our final project, our job was to create a living moodboard that continuously evolved throughout the semester. The board was used to develop and communicate my final garment concept through inspiration images, research, quick sketches, fabric ideas, and prototype notes. As part of the project, we were required to incorporate two inspiration elements, one personal and one from nature, which guided the direction of my final design. The moodboard also included inspiration images and color scheme visuals to help shape the garment’s overall aesthetic. Throughout the semester, we had three checkpoints with our professor to share our evolving inspiration, receive feedback, and continue developing the concept through experimentation and problem solving.
Concept Inspiration
Color Inspiration
In the days leading up to the first checkpoint for this living moodboard, I received difficult news about a close friend. Because of that, this project became centered around the idea of slowing down, finding peace during difficult moments, and trusting that healing can come after hardship. The emotional inspiration for this garment came from quotes found in an old note my sister wrote to me during my freshman year of college. My nature inspiration came from the calmness after a storm - the soft wind, quiet stillness, and sense of peace once everything settles. Together, these inspirations influenced the softness, movement, and fluidity throughout the design.
The color palette was inspired by the sunset hues I experienced during my trip to Puerto Vallarta over spring break, which took place during the development of this project. The soft flushing pink tones were inspired by the sunset hues captured in the photo with my family and friends during the trip, while the anise flower and whisper white shades reflect the sandy beaches and coastal atmosphere. The flame orange tones, used minimally within the trim details, were inspired by the sunsets in Puerto Vallarta. Together, the palette creates a calm and reflective mood representing warmth, comfort, and emotional peace.
Design process
When designing the garment, I wanted the silhouette to feel fluid and effortless. The flowy flare sleeves were inspired by the soft wind after a storm, while the low cowl neckline references the gentle ocean waves I saw in Puerto Vallarta. Lightweight chiffon enhances the softness and movement throughout the design, symbolizing healing and emotional release, while the shiny crepe satin reflects the light and beauty that follows a storm. The draped silhouette and flowing fabrics work together to create a sense of calmness, ease, and natural movement.
