This semester, my team completed a collaborative product development project focused on Target womenswear. Our professor assigned us the brand and our roles were to act as if we were employees designing a future Target line. Our team structure reflected real industry roles, including creative designers, technical designers, merchandisers, product developers, and textile art designers.
I served as a Product Developer, working primarily in PLM to build and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) for each style. After muslin fit sessions, I revised BOM details so the merchandising team could generate accurate garment pricing. This course partnered with a senior Technical Design class, who developed physical samples for our final presentation, allowing us to see the line move from concept to prototype.
This project gave me hands-on insight into real design line development and strengthened my technical skills in PLM. It was one of the most valuable experiences I’ve had for understanding how cross-functional fashion teams collaborate.
